Senate to AGF: Prosecute those who Participate in ‘Jungle Justice’

Disturbed by the rising cases of jungle justice across the country, the Senate has asked the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and the Minister of Jus­tice, Abubakar Malami (SAN) and the Police to arrest and prosecute the perpetrators.

The Upper House also directed its Com­mittee on the Judiciary to accelerate the pas­sage of the Anti-Jungle Justice Bill, which is be­fore it.
It expressed opti­mism that the passage of the Bill will address the worrisome cases of jungle justice in the country.
The lawmakers urged the police to fish out all the perpetrators of the barbaric act and bring them to book.
The Senate further asked all the state Attorneys-General to show greater sense of duty.
The admonitions were prompted by a motion titled: ‘Con­demning the Rising Cases of Jungle Justice in the Country’ co-sponsored by Senator Gbenga Ashafa (Lagos) and the Senate Leader, Ali Ndume (Borno).
Ashafa said he was disturbed that jungle justice which is with­out recourse to the law courts was on the in­crease in Nigeria and needed to be stopped.
He condemned the growing culture of ex­treme hate and disre­gard for human life, coupled with the institutional lethargy against prosecution by some state Attorney-Generals, and the re­cent case of Mrs Bridget Agbahime, who was killed in July 2016 by a mob in Kano for hav­ing a different opinion from those of her at­tackers.
