Image
Celtic captain Scott Brown insists the team will be back in the Champions League next year after they exited Europe with a game to play. The Scottish champions' 2-0 home defeat by Barcelona, thanks to Lionel Messi's killer double, means they will finish bottom of Group C. "Getting to this stage is great for us but we want to try and push on as much as we possibly can," he said.

Arsenal 2-2 Paris St-Germain: No need to panic, says Arsene Wenger

Image
Arsene Wenger says there is no reason to panic after his Arsenal side were held to a 2-2 draw by Paris St-Germain in the Champions League. The result at Emirates Stadium on Wednesday - which leaves Arsenal second in Group A - was their third successive draw in all competitions, although they are unbeaten in 18 matches. The Frenchman said that the Gunners need to "transform draws into wins". He added: "Sometimes you go through spells when you win a bit less." Arsenal were 2-1 up in the second half against the French champions and seeking the win that would have put them top of Group A, but Lucas' header gave the visitors an equaliser 13 minutes from time. In the Gunners' previous two games, they were held to draws by Tottenham and Manchester United in the Premier League. "We have a special strength in the squad, a consistency in results," Wenger added. "We are unbeaten in 18 games. But we have to continue without losing and

The Monday Catch-Up - 21/11/2016

I n what was a typically grey November weekend across the country, the arrival of JK Rowling's latest magical adventure - Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them - was all the inspiration we needed to get out of the comfort of a central-heated home. The tale of a magizoologist landing with a suitcase of magical creatures in New York took £67.4 million at the box office. Making her Harry Potter debut, costume designer Colleen Atwood's creations are equally awe-inspiring (be ready to fall in love with Queenie's plush jacket specifically). If you've not seen the film yet, be sure to meet the leading ladies here first .

Donald Trump calls for unity in Thanksgiving holiday address

Image
US President-elect Donald Trump has called for national unity in an address to mark the Thanksgiving holiday. In the wake of what he called a "long and bruising" election campaign he said emotions in the country were raw. The time had come, he said, "to begin to heal our divisions" but added that "tensions just don't heal overnight". Earlier he announced the appointment of two women to his cabinet, both of whom had been fiercely critical of him during the presidential campaign. In his Thanksgiving address, Mr Trump acknowledged the bitterness still remaining after the bruising election campaign: "It doesn't go quickly, unfortunately, but we have before us the chance now to make history together to bring real change to Washington, real safety to our cities, and real prosperity to our communities, including our inner cities."

CJN earns N500,000 monthly, S’Court reveals

Image
The Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, earns N500,000 monthly as salary, the Supreme Court has revealed. The apex Court made the revelation on Tuesday while reacting to a publication alleging that it was operating a secret account from which illegal withdrawals and payments were being made to Justices, including the CJN. It said there was no truth in the allegation that it operates a secret account from which its justices, including the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, benefited from illegal withdrawal of funds. However, the Supreme Court, in a statement signed by its Director of Press and Information, Dr. Akande Festus, said the salaries and allowances paid to its Justices were “either provided for or alluded to in the Certain Political, Public and Judicial Office Holders [Salaries and Allowances, etc.] [Amendment] Act, 2008″.

Minister Ogbeh rubbishes Buhari’s spokesman, says there’ll be no famine in Nigeria

Image
The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, has debunked the position of President Muhammadu Buhari’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, that Nigeria may witness famine from early next year. Malam Shehu had in a recent radio interview in Kano warned that Nigeria, one of the largest producers of cereals is in danger of witnessing famine from early next year following huge demand in the global market. Shehu had said that the demand of grains from Nigeria in the global market was generating an “excellent environment for the mindless exports of Nigeria’s food across the borders’’ and warned that unless it was curtailed, that the Nigerian markets would be bereft of grains by January. But Ogbeh, on Tuesday assured that the Federal Government has put needed measures in place to forestall hunger and famine in the country. Tinubu’s ‘boy’ Afikuyomi says Gov Lalong lied that Jagaban is sick

Image
Senator Tokunbo Afikuyomi, a political associate of a national leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has stated that it is untrue that Tinubu is sick. He was reacting to statements credited to Plateau State’s Governor Solomon Lalong saying that Tinubu did not grace the mega rally of the party in Ondo state because of ill health. Governor Lalong who is Chairman of the Ondo State Governorship Campaign was reported to have told reporters that “if a leader was not there and he said he was not there because of ill-health, we have prayed that God will heal him.” Afikuyomi in a statement Tuesday described Lalong’s submissions on Tinubu as “carelessly disingenuous, patently false, grossly unfair and most embarrassing”. Although he failed to divulge the real rationale behind Tinubu’s absence at the rally, Afikuyomi, who was a senator for the same eight year period Tinubu was governor of Lagos state, said: “I traveled to the United States of America with Asiwaju Bola Ahmed T

3 Undeniable Reasons for Every Nigerian to Shop Locally

Image
How much is one Dollar to Naira today? Scratch that, there’s no need to cry over spilled milk. Let’s face the solution and not dwell too long on the problem. Here’s what we think. Since it practically costs an arm and a leg to purchase anything abroad, we have to look inwards. We agree that loads of substandard products exist in our markets especially locally made ones but let’s not make sweeping assumptions. Some Nigerian-made products really do meet up to global standards. Still not convinced to shop locally? Here are some reasons for you to have a rethink. Your spending will boost the local economy- we can blame the government all we want or we can choose to do our little bit to curb the situation. You will be an indirect employer of labour- look at it this way, if the local companies stay in business thanks to your purchases, people get to keep their jobs. Don’t you feel like a hero already??? Cisi Eze: I’m a Woman & I Need a Wife

Image
need the In a wry twist, I person society wants me to be- a wife. Wives are delightful! They literally do everything– wash, iron, cook, pray, etc. Life and its vicissitudes require I get one. I want to go home to clean sheets, warm food, zand great sex after a long day at work. According to society, only people with a warm, moist orifice betwixt their thighs are capable of doing all these. The other people with extended, phallus-like appendages on the lower part of their anatomies can’t because… “superior”. What makes them superior? That part of their anatomy or… I’m seriously curious. For starters, with a man, it would be conventional marriage. Conventional marriage, in my society, thwarts the concept of marriage equality. Conversely, with a woman, we would establish we are equal partners. After all, no one paid bride price. From reading Chinelo Okparanta’s Under the Udala Trees, I understood two partners in a marriage are like two wheels of a bicycle; they work to
